The Joy Dare

Two summers ago while I celebrated my 40th birthday, my sweet friend sent a birthday gift with my husband to give to me on my big day while we were in Africa for the summer. That big day is a whole other post in itself but we will save it for another day…..
My friend, Tiffany, had carefully wrapped up three of my favorite things: a book, coffee, and jewelry. She knows me well. Of course I consumed the Starbucks brand coffee with great delight and wore the necklace as quickly as I could. But the book? The book was not a fiction book so I was not as quick to dive into it.
So it sat on my bedside table.
For a week. Then we had an American guest stay over one night in our villa and she told me about a book that changed her life. Not just changed her life but CHANGED her life! It was the very same book my friend had so lovingly sent with my husband across the great pond.
One Thousand Gifts  by Ann Voskamp

One thousand gifts.  What gifts?  I have read the majority of the book and even started my own 1000 gifts journal.  It is equivalent to a thanksgiving journal I guess but with a bit of a twist.

The twist is looking at the very breaths I take, the small miniscule daily tasks, the simple views I experience, etc, etc, etc. as gifts.  Everything from God is a gift.  He is the giver of life.  And life is a gift.

But so often I don’t live like I  believe that.

I get wrapped up in the to do list and have developed cataracts of sorts over my eyes so I am unable to see the JOY in it all.

That is SAD.

So…..this is why I have recommitted to read and PUT INTO EFFECT this book.  The concept.  The experience.  The fullness.   The JOY of finding delight.

So……

How do we find joy,” Ann Voskamp wondered, “in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama, and daily duties?” When your days are filled with the mundane, disappointment, or even darkness, how can you break the bondage of self-hatred and fear that has white-knuckle control on your life and instead embrace the everyday blessings that will immerse you in Christ’s fullness? How can you live your life with a heart overflowing with delight?  (quoted from Ann’s website at
http://www.aholyexperience.com).

That, my friend, is my resolution.  To find JOY in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama, and daily routines.   Oh!  I resolved not to make a resolution this year so it must be a goal.  But how do I go about that?

Look for it.  Write it down.  Soak in HIS goodness.  Fall deeply in love with HIM.

In my attempts to meet my goal I will also make great strides in my desire to be a more consistent blogger. I plan on participating in the JOY DARE that is based off of the book.  I started my One Thousand Gifts Journal but after 16 months, I am only on number 276.  I have spurts then droughts.  This JOY DARE will hold me accountable by giving me 3 prompts daily.  At the end of 2013, I will have about 1,000 gifts recorded.

BUT I am 2 days behind.

So today I will have THREE posts.

May you enjoy finding JOY in the dailies….
